What Is Telematics And How It Helps In Saving Money On Car Insurance

What Is Telematics

I recently got new auto insurance myself, and I’m trying the telematics program of this particular insurance carrier. If you haven’t heard one of my previous videos, it’s where you use either a device that plugs into your car or, in my case, a phone-based app, and with this particular company, it’s a 90-day trial. So, I save 10% while I’m in the program. So, I’m doing the test and getting a final discount of anywhere between 5% to 20% off my premium. 

Telematics Can Help You Save On Auto Insurance

You’ll see carriers that have long periods that you have to have to the telematics device there. There are some insurance companies where you can save 30% to 40% based on your good driving skills, and there are even some carriers that will increase your insurance rates if you are a bad driver. So it’s super important if you’re looking at telematics. Understand the details of the program. 

Telematics Review: What I Like About Telematics

But here’s my experience with it. I think it’s actually pretty cool. I was dreading going into it. I’m like, oh my gosh, big brother’s going to be looking on my shoulder. It’s going to be beeping at me. 

I’ve got mine set up that it doesn’t correct or coach me while I’m driving, which is important. It tracks all my drives. I go back in, and I confirm that those were trips that I made. So say my wife drove to dinner or I was driving with my in-laws. Ultimately I can knock those trips as me not driving.

I find it easy to help with those two big things they really rate on: hard braking and fast starts. That acceleration piece helps me focus on not being so quick off the line with everybody running red lights these days. It focuses on applying the break sooner when you see that you’re coming to a stop, and it’s reinforcing some really good habits. 

Consider Getting Into Program

So overall, telematics is pretty awesome. There’s a ton of upside tools. You need to do your homework. Make sure you like what the carrier offers within their telematics program, but almost every major carrier is offering that in Colorado these days.
