Renting a car

Hey, guys. Jason here with 303 Insurance Brokers and I wanted to share with you another insurance tip of the day. Today, I want to talk about rental car insurance and how your auto insurance works when renting a car on vacation.

Car Rentals Are Costly

Vacations are fun, but right now, if you’ve tried to rent a car, car rentals are costly, which is leaving more and more clients of mine to want to go to a third-party rental company like Turopeer-to-peer rentals where they’re not going through enterprise and not going through Hertz.

How Your Personal Car Insurance Work When Renting A Car

How does your own personal car insurance work for that? Typically, if you are the renter of a vehicle, it doesn’t matter if you’re renting a car from enterprise or Turo. Your personal auto insurance policy typically is going to work. Of course, it’s always wise to double-check it, but typically is it’s going to cover it. Your liability limits are going to follow you. Your comprehensive and collision are going to follow you. Your towing may not follow you, but the primary coverages of that policy will cover.

When Do You Need A Rental Car Insurance?

Suppose you are renting something large, like a 15 passenger van, a box truck, or a truck from Home Depot. In that case, you may want to double-check your insurance. Most of the time, if you’re doing something bigger than personal use, which is typically what you’re doing with those bigger vehicles. In that case, you may want to go ahead and purchase the insurance package, rental car insurance, from the rental company.

The important thing to do is there’s insurance. Suppose you’re doing peer-to-peer rentals. Always reach out to your agent, verify you’ve got the right coverages in place.

We’re definitely happy to do that here at 303 Insurance Brokers, and if you’re thinking about renting your vehicle out on a peer-to-peer basis through Turo through another rideshare or car share app. Reach out to your insurance agent.
