How To Ensure Your Car Customization Is Covered By Your Auto Insurance

We had some beautiful weather to enjoy, and I noticed more and more vehicles, especially the four-by-fours here in Colorado, that have been souped up. A lot of car customization.

Some vehicles got on top of them; they’ve got the tent that folds out. They’ve got the gear for four-wheeling. They’ve got a whole bunch of customization.

Insurance Company Does Not Take Note Of Your Car Customization

How do you ensure that, when we look at these systems that can cost $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000, when we’re talking about lifting a vehicle, putting under care drafts on it, front bumper, back bumper, you’re all these aftermarket parts, your insurance company is not rating or counting those car modifications into their auto insurance ratings unless you talk to your local insurance agent about it.

Insurance Have Certain Limit Of Car Customization

So here’s the tip. Talk to your insurance agent when you customize your vehicle. Every policy comes with a certain limit of customization, normally somewhere between $2,000 to $3,000. We, as the agent, can up it up to $10,000 to $20,000, depending on the insurance carrier, and sometimes we need to go to a specialty carrier.

Avoid The Worst Thing That Could Happen

If you’ve got that significant upgrade, you’ve made $30,000, 40,000, or $50,000. Make sure you get your car modification and insure it correctly. Because if you do have an accident with it and spent all this extra money, you would hate to get a base model back for your vehicle.
