Hail Storm Damage

Spring has arrived in Colorado. We’re approaching summer, and this is probably something I’ve mentioned before on an insurance tip. It’s important enough that you’re aware of it, and let’s talk about it again, this time about hail storms. In Colorado, it’s hail season. These afternoon thunderstorms are forming, and they may or may not drop hail in and around your home soon.

In Colorado, hail season begins as early as April. We’ve had significant storms all the way through October at this point. So, I always start with the two most important things you don’t do when your house is hit by hail.

Call Your Insurance Agent, Not The Insurance Company

The first thing you don’t want to do is contact your insurance company. That may seem counterintuitive, but if you dial an 800 number and speak with a claims department about an insurance claim, you’ve probably just put an insurance claim on your record, which can affect your insurance in the future. Whether or not the insurance claim is paid, this can have a negative impact.

Hire a Licensed Roofer in Your Area

The second thing you don’t want to do if the storm hits is just let any old roofer up on your roof. When hail storms occur in some of these larger areas, storm chasers from Colorado, Dallas, Texas, and other states are on the scene. Some roofers want to come out and tell you that your roof is beaten up and damaged and then assist you in dealing with the insurance company. We don’t want those people on our roof either. We have no idea if they are licensed in Colorado. We’re not sure if they’re insured. A lot of things are unknown to us.

The Benefits of Using An Insurance Agent

So, what are your options? Contact your insurance agent, someone like me, or a local insurance agent you trust. It is the benefit of working with an insurance agent. Let’s get a trusted, verified local roofer up on your roof. Let’s assess the situation. Let’s gather everything and ensure we have enough damage to get through the insurance process.

So it’s hail season once more. There are do’s and don’ts when dealing with hail claims and damage, but if you want a free review, contact me if you have any questions about your insurance policy.
